CSIC, Crue and Wiley sign transformative agreement to boost open access publishing in Spanish research institutions

The Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) and CRUE have signed an agreement with John Wiley & Sons to promote open access publications in 59 Spanish universities and the CSIC, the largest research institution in Spain.

This reading and publishing agreement, initially for one year, is part of a broader contract between Crue and CSIC with Wiley. The agreement will allow researchers from the participating institutions to access both Wiley journals and to publish in open access in Wiley's hybrid journals, which contain both subscription and open access content. As a result of the agreement, it is estimated that 70% of the articles published by participating institutions in 2021 will be open access, which will allow more research from leading Spanish institutions to be read, cited and developed.

In the words of Jesús Marco, Vice President of Research at CSIC: "Wiley is currently the second largest publisher of our researchers at CSIC, which is why having reached this reading and publishing agreement is an important milestone in our strategy of promoting open access as a fundamental pillar for open science at CSIC. This agreement is in addition to the more than 20 open access agreements that CSIC has with a wide range of scientific publishers in its Open Access Publishing Support Program. Fostering a diverse and plural open access publishing ecosystem is also an objective to be achieved. We are also very pleased to have achieved this in alliance with the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities.

This agreement is Wiley's third open access agreement worldwide and the eleventh in Europe.
