The CRUE-CSIC agreement with the publisher Wiley, initiated in 2021, renewed in 2022 and then extended until 2024, has been focused on the financing of open access articles in the so-called hybrid journals (those that still have a subscription part, for whose reading you have to pay). The result for the CSIC in the past year has been the publication of about 350 articles in open access, at no cost to the authors, in this type of journals.

As an improvement in 2023 the agreement with Wiley will also consider funding in Gold or Full OA journals (those that do not have any content in subscription mode, all articles are published open access).

For this purpose a finite fund is available, which will pay APCs of Gold journals until the fund is exhausted. This possibility is already in place for articles submitted to such journals after January 1, 2023.

As is the case for all publishers with which the Open Access Publication Support Program for CSIC authors works, it is an essential condition that the articles must always be corresponding author of the CSIC. Throughout the paper submission process, authors must follow specific instructions (different from those of hybrid journals) in order to benefit from this fund for Gold OA titles.

A list of more than 550 Gold OA journals eligible to receive articles can be accessed. Wiley's Gold OA journals are joined by more than 250 titles from Hindawi, a publisher incorporated into Wiley a couple of years ago, which has been publishing peer-reviewed open access scientific journals since its inception.
