IQAC - Institut de Química Avançada de Catalunya

The Institute of Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia (IQAC) was created to conduct research excellence in basic chemical sciences, but also aimed at solving specific problems of our society using tools interface chemistry-biology, theoretical chemistry, chemical nanotechnology and biomolecular and sustainable chemistry. In particular, it is pursued systematically identifying niches where our expertise can develop important and innovative contributions.

Institut de Diagnosi Ambiental i Estudis de l'Aigua

The IDAEA aims the study of natural and anthropogenic changes occurring in ecosystems by chemical and geochemical techniques, primarily those involving toxicity increases in organisms and humans.

The IDAEA has been organized from the experience of several researchers in environmental analytical chemistry, geochemistry, hydrology and biotechnology. They have a proven track record of publication in journals of excellence, participation in European projects, collaboration in solving serious environmental accidents, identifying environmental problems and study of climate and global change.

Spain has specific problems arising from their geographical and climatic situation. The quality and availability of water, both from rivers and aquifers, is subject to a high rate of reuse and intensive exploitation to the reduced availability of this resource. It is necessary to develop a major effort to monitor and ensure the quality of it.

Another specific problem concerns the air quality is drastically influenced by episodes of Saharan dust input in addition to the problems of urban and industrial pollution.

Another important aspect concerns the effects of diffuse pollution on organisms of the environment and humans.
