Olga López Serrano, from the Biophysics of Lipids and Interfaces group of the IQAC, has been selected, together with 11 other research projects, by the 'La Caixa' Foundation and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the second call of MIT-Spain 'La Caixa' Foundation Seed Fund.
Through an annual call for proposals, the MIT-SPAIN ”la Caixa” Foundation SEED FUND provides grants with the aim of supporting research projects carried out jointly between Spanish universities and research groups and MIT research groups.
This call for proposals aims to boost cooperation between faculty, researchers and students in Spain and those from MIT. All Spanish non-profit research centres and universities can enter the call for proposals, in collaboration with one or more research groups at MIT.
The awarded project, "Advanced Lipid Nanostructures to overcome Blood-Brain-Barrier", of the research group led by Olga López, aims the design of lipid nanostructures to repair blood-brain barrier, the membrane that protects the brain. Nanostructures will also be designed to facilitate the access of drugs to the brain. The ultimate goal is to modify the permeability of the barrier to effectively treat diseases of the central nervous system, such as Alzheimer disease.
