Social-Scientific Party CID-CSIC 2017
The day October 28, 2017 was not a Saturday like another for the CID-CSIC and neither for the people who work in this center during the week. With 50 years of age, the buildings of the center should not spend another Saturday in solitude, so they had the honor of welcoming hundreds of workers who came with their families and friends for the Social-Scientific Party 2017.
The day promised a lot for young and old, scientists and non-scientists.
The morning started with a neuromagic show. Nadia Santamaría Gálvez fascinated the audience with a magnificent mixture of neurobiology, illusionism and magic. People left the room with a doubt that will remain for life: what we perceive is reality or is it our brain that generates the illusion?
... reality were the games which the children found when they reached the garden of the CID: Human table soccert, inflatable racecourse and many games based on scientific concepts.
And if until that moment the birds were the only ones who accompanied the day with their musical twittering, the rhythmic and dynamic music of Zumba came to dominate the dance stage! The lab coats were replaced by sports clothing and a group of people got motivated to lose calories by dancing. It seems that they knew that soon they would eat the giant paella that was being prepared.
At 13:00 the reward finally arrived: the food. A delicious paella that was served for everyone and that could be tasted at the tables that were installed in the garden.
One of the objectives of the day was to disseminate the research that is being developed in the center. That is why some of the most active researchers in terms of the scientific communication of the center-Yoran Beldengrün, doctoral student of the IQAC-CSIC, and Òscar Aznar, postdoctoral researcher of the IDAEA-CSIC-carried out a memorable show, each one explaining science in his way: Dr. Willy, as he calls himself Yoran on stage, explained chemistry concepts based on experiments with chocolate, a foam volcano and demonstrating an example of molecular gastronomy, spherification, imitating food designed by the world-renowned chef Ferran Adrià. All that would not have been possible without all the young assistants of the public who helped him in the execution and explanation of the experiments.
Òscar continued with a Disney musical although, instead of the beautiful Disney lyrics which make us cry, he proceeded to replace the lyrics of the songs of The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Hercules, Frozen, Aladdin, Pocahontas etc., by explanations of his study in which he compared the presence of pyrethroid insecticides in raised and wild salmon.
The party culminated with line dances and a scientific gymkhana that some researchers had prepared for the young people who came to visit and celebrate the birthday of the CID-CSIC. On a tour through the center's facilities, the different groups had to pass several tests that required skills that good researchers also need: knowledge, perseverance, creativity, concentration and logic.
In summary, the Social-scientific party of the CID-CSIC has been a great success that has allowed the people closest to the researchers to obtain a good perspective of the life of the center, and as well strengthen the relationships between the workers.
